Mars is named after the Roman god of war!

Sometimes humans call Mars the
red planet.

Iron oxide in the planet’s rocks and soil give Mars a
reddish color.
Mars is smaller than Earth.
Mars is

It has a thin
atmosphere.

The surface of the planet is
cold
and
dry
and
dusty.
All Mars’s water is frozen into
polar ice caps.
The planet has two small moons:
Phobos
and
DEIMOS
Unlike Earth’s round moon,
Mars’s moons look a little like
funky potatoes.

Mar’s is also home to the tallest
in the solar system!
It's called
Olympus Mons
and it's more than twice as tall as Earth's Mount Everest.
Humans know more about Mars than any other planet!
Human scientists have even sent robots called
rovers
to explore the red planet.

These rovers have found evidence that Mars’s surface was once very different!
Billions of years ago, Mars had a
warmer climate.

It had a thicker
atmosphere
and
liquid water.
Mars may have even been home to
ancient life!

But scientists think any life was probably
microbial.
As far as we know, there’s no life on Mars today.

But humans dream of sending
spaceships
to Mars

and maybe even building a
colony
there one day!
